Lake George High School seniors Sophia Kassal and Amelia Gates are leaving their mark on the art world, thanks to their experiences in the ceramics class.
Sophia, who plans to pursue a degree in marketing or advertising, has found inspiration in the ceramic process itself. “The most interesting thing I’ve learned is easily the process of successfully creating a piece,” she shared. “It usually takes 1-3 weeks, with many steps like forming, refining, firing, and glazing. Though frustrating at times, the amazing pieces that are created make it all worth it.” Sophia’s unique artistic voice shines through in her innovative glaze combinations, creating pieces that stand out with vibrant colors and textures.

Amelia, who is planning on exploring her interests at SUNY Adirondack, also found inspiration in the practical applications of ceramics. “Creating everyday pieces like bowls or mugs is super cool,” she said. “They are a great gift and heartwarming to see around the house.” Amelia believes her unique touch lies in the small design details she incorporates into each piece.
Both students encourage fellow art students to embrace experimentation. “Experiment with different forms and mediums in art,” said Sophia. “Though I was initially unsure of my skills, ceramics quickly became a favorite hobby.” Amelia emphasized the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone: “Never be afraid to try out new colors and designs. If you’re stuck, Pinterest can be a successful platform for inspiration.”

The success of these artists demonstrates the valuable role that art education has on creativity, problem-solving skills, and a lifelong appreciation for artistic expression.
