LGES Beyond the Classroom: Supporting Students’ Whole Development

Lake George Elementary School (LGES) students are receiving support in their academic, career, and social-emotional development thanks to the school counselor, Zoe Chodak. Creating lessons that align with the district’s mission and vision, she is providing students in UPK through 6th grade, with the tools they need to succeed.

One of the key areas of focus is social-emotional learning (SEL). Chodak carefully selects topics based on the needs of the students, creating engaging and relevant lessons. This year, students have already participated in a “Family Feud” type game to review previous lessons and learned about goal setting and responsibility through interactive activities and games.

Personal goal setting was an important aspect of the curriculum in October. Students were encouraged to create SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely) goals and share them with their classmates to allow for personal accountability.

Throughout the year, students learn a variety of skills, including coping strategies, self-control, growth mindset, and perseverance. Chodak uses creative and engaging activities to make learning fun and interactive.

For older students, a six-week career exploration program is offered.

“I believe in constantly evolving my approach to teaching and counseling,” said Chodak. “By mixing up lessons and staying open to new ideas, I can better support our students’ growth and development.”

Later this year, fourth-graders will participate in a “Shark Tank” activity, where they work in groups to design a product, write a business proposal, and present their ideas to a panel of judges.

“I love seeing the excitement and enthusiasm in students’ eyes during the Shark Tank activity,” expressed Chodak. “It’s a chance for them to shine  using collaborative skills and show off their innovative ideas.”

Chodak’s dedication to providing high-quality counseling services through SEL is evident in the innovative and engaging lessons she develops. By focusing on students’ social-emotional needs, she is helping them build a strong foundation for their future success.
