Lake George Elementary School’s Young Scholars program is no stranger to pushing creativity. Every other year, this select group of students participates in the NPR Student Podcast Challenge, showcasing their skills and teamwork in a unique and exciting way.
This past spring, five teams of Young Scholars collaborated with Mr. Bizan and Mrs. Crossman to create five different podcasts, each between 3 and 10 minutes long. Focusing on real-life skills like interviewing, editing, and production. A group of students tackled a relatable topic: “What Kids Know, What Parents Don’t Understand: Being Told What To Do.”
Following a student-run approach, the Young Scholars conducted interviews, meticulously cut out the perfect snippets, and produced and edited the entire podcast themselves. The final products were then uploaded to Soundcloud, where they can be enjoyed by all.
The podcast, “Being Told What To Do” by Avery Miron, Luke Musto, and Alex Champagne, garnered them an impressive runner-up spot at the national level, marking this the second time LGES has received such recognition.
“The NPR Student Podcast Challenge offers an invaluable real-world learning experience for students,” said Bizan. “It allows them to explore their voices, hone valuable skills that extend far beyond a traditional classroom setting, and collaborate to create something truly special.”
