Goal of the Role

The goal of the Student Board Member role is to ensure that student voices are heard in decisions that affect their education and school experience.

Student Board Member Election Process

  • Open to: All LGHS 9-11 grade students (rising 10-12)
  • Positions: Two – Co-representative positions
  • Term Length: One year term
  • Election Timeline: Annual elections will be held in May for the following school year, with appointments occurring in July.
  • Election Process: Building-wide (grades 7-11) election through ballot.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Current 9-11 students (rising 10-12)
  • A statement of interest from the student
  • One (1) written statement of support from an LGHS teacher, reviewed by the principal and student council adviser.

Qualifications:

  • Good academic standing and consistent school attendance.
  • Interested in government, history, civic engagement, community involvement.
  • Interested in analyzing issues, representing student viewpoints, and speaking publicly.
  • Final determination of eligibility for election will be made by the Principal and Student Council Adviser.

Student Board Member General Responsibilities

  • Give a monthly student update at Board meetings, reporting on student happenings, events, and feedback.
  • Meet with the high school principal and/or superintendent monthly to develop reports and focus areas.
  • Attend Student Council meetings to gather student feedback.
  • Coordinate Board meeting attendance with the other student co-representative.
  • Potential for additional board committee responsibilities based on interest.

Student Board Member Responsibilities to Student Body

  • Represent student voice at Board of Education meetings, ensuring clear communication channels to share information and gather feedback.
  • Attend Student Council meetings and report back to the student body.
  • Gather student thoughts and feedback through existing structures at LGHS (as needed or requested).

Student Board Member Training and Supports

  • Board of Education / District mentor program to guide students through the process.
  • Training for Board procedures and meeting protocols.
  • Assigned and mentored by a Board member.
  • Board of Education handbook to guide students and define roles and responsibilities.
  • Training / Mentoring begins in July / August of each school year.
