Lake George Jr.-Sr. High School Fights Hunger with “Empty Bowls” Event

Lake George Jr.-Sr. High School students, staff, and families participated in the nationwide “Empty Bowls” initiative, bringing together students from art and culinary classes to raise awareness and funds to combat hunger and homelessness in their local community.

The heart of the “Empty Bowls” event is in its unique blend of artistry and culinary delicacy. Ceramics students dedicated their time and talent to handcrafting beautiful, one-of-a-kind bowls. Simultaneously, culinary students prepared a delicious warm soup, providing a comforting meal for guests. The combination of these efforts created an evening that symbolized the collective effort to fill empty bowls and address food insecurity.

“This event is a powerful demonstration of how art can be a catalyst for positive change,” said Erin Connolly, Jr.-Sr. Art Teacher. “Our students poured their hearts into creating these bowls, knowing they were contributing to a cause greater than themselves. It’s a lesson in empathy and community involvement that goes beyond the classroom.”

Attendees purchased bowls filled with soup, contributing to the impressive total of over $300 raised. All proceeds were donated to the Sacred Heart Food Pantry and H.A.R.K. (Helping Achieve Remarkable Kindness), two local charities dedicated to combating food insecurity and providing essential support to those in need.

H.A.R.K. has been serving the Lake George community for a decade, providing food for the backpack programs at both the Jr.-Sr. High School and Elementary School, ensuring that no child goes hungry on weekends. They also provide school supplies to students in need. The partnership with these vital local organizations made the “Empty Bowls” event even more impactful.

“Seeing our students come together to make a difference is truly inspiring,” said Jill Long, Jr.-Sr. High School FACS Teacher. “The culinary students worked diligently to prepare soup and they were so proud to serve the community. This event taught them valuable lessons about giving back and the importance of addressing hunger in our own backyard.”
