Students in Mrs. Breslin’s Career Financial Management class recently had the opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the professional world through a series of community-based job shadow experiences. This hands-on initiative allowed students to explore career paths, build workplace skills, and gain invaluable insights into the day-to-day operations of various industries.
The job shadowing experience, a culmination of the Career Financial Management curriculum, connects students with local businesses and organizations, fostering meaningful partnerships between the school and the community. Participating students learned about email etiquette as they reached out to local professionals in fields of interest, including healthcare, technology, education, business, and public service.
“We are fortunate to have many generous local professionals who value providing this job shadowing experience to our students,” said Breslin. “The students gained incredible experiences to assist them in bridging the gap between what they learn in class and how it applies in the real world.”
Throughout the experience, students observed and interacted with professionals, gaining first hand exposure to workplace dynamics, responsibilities, and expectations. Mrs. Breslin reflected on the importance of face-to-face learning. “This experience not only helps them refine their career goals but also builds confidence and essential soft skills like verbal communication and active listening.”
The success of the program reflects the strong support from local businesses and organizations that volunteered their time and expertise to mentor the next generation of professionals. Whittemore, Dowen & Ricciardelli, LLP, Oak Tree Pediatric Dentistry, High Peak Physical Therapy, Summit Group, and Balzer & Tuck Architecture, were among those who participated, welcoming students into their workplaces and providing a glimpse into various career paths.
