Lake George Central School District to Celebrate Solar Eclipse on April 8th

As the upcoming Solar Eclipse approaches on April 8th, Lake George Central School District is gearing up for an exciting celestial event. With Lake George situated in the 99th percentile of the path of totality, the main event is expected to occur around 3:20 PM, lasting upwards of four minutes, and concluding by approximately 4:30 PM.

To enhance the educational experience and ensure the safety of students and families, the district has organized a series of activities and precautions: The Misci Museum will provide special astronomy presentations in the days leading-up to the eclipse, enriching students’ understanding of this rare phenomenon. Students in grades 7-12 will delve into the science behind the solar eclipse through dedicated lessons in their science classes. Each student will receive two safety solar eclipse glasses to use with a family member, emphasizing the importance of protecting their eyes during the event, and an ample supply of additional glasses will be available at the solar eclipse viewing event on the elementary athletic fields, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to safely witness the spectacle. Students enrolled in Earth Science and Astronomy classes will have the unique opportunity to embark on a field trip to Minerva to experience totality firsthand, enriching their academic journey beyond the classroom.

In light of the eclipse, all after-school activities will be canceled, with Spring sports practices commencing after 5:00 PM to prioritize sun safety. During this time, the district extends an invitation to all Lake George Central School District teachers, staff, students, and families to join in the viewing event. Families are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs and gather on the soccer field in front of the elementary school.

Normal dismissal procedures will be followed for students, ensuring a seamless transition to the viewing event. Parents or guardians must accompany all K-6 students participating in the solar eclipse viewing event on the athletic fields, following normal sign-out procedures. Students who typically ride the bus home are welcome to return to the fields with a parent or guardian to witness the eclipse.

Please note that all plans are weather-dependent and subject to change, as the safety and enjoyment of students and families remains essential. These arrangements have been carefully crafted to provide consistency for students while accommodating the eclipse’s occurrence immediately after Spring break. As LGCSED eagerly anticipates the Solar Eclipse on April 8th, these plans reflect the district’s commitment to educational excellence, safety, and our local community. Let us come together as a community to marvel at the wonders of the universe and create lasting memories under the Solar Eclipse.
