Lake George FBLA and Interact Club students have teamed up with Fort William Henry to construct a “Field of Flags” in commemoration of Veterans Day. This community initiative not only pays tribute to the brave U.S. Armed Forces veterans but also demonstrates the power of collective effort in honoring those who have served our nation.
Senior, Anna Richichi expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to this meaningful project, saying, “Seeing how much work actually goes into this is incredible. I think that it’s rewarding that we get to help out. I was glad we were able to contribute to something great in our community.”
Students participated by carrying flag racks from the fort to the lawn in front of the hotel, where they are currently on display, organizing and placing flag racks on the lawn into rows, and ensured that broken flags were replaced and repositioned.
This year, the “Field of Flags” will feature an astonishing 9,366 flags, each representing a U.S. Armed Forces veteran. These names, along with their ranks, the conflicts they were involved in, any special designations they received, and their active service status, have been submitted by families and friends to Fort William Henry. The “Field of Flags” will be open for public viewing from Friday, November 3rd, through Sunday, November 12th.
“We are so appreciative that our students at Lake George High School could help support our community through the Field of Flags at Fort William Henry. The students were so grateful for the opportunity to honor the sacrifices of our veterans in this meaningful way,” said Superintendent Luthringer.
In preparation for this year’s event, names of veterans have been collected throughout the year. Cyndy Avery, Director of Education at The Fort William Henry, shared the following: “We are honored to present this year’s ‘Field of Flags,’ with 9,366 names of veterans on display. This event serves as a reminder of the sacrifice and service of these individuals, and it’s an opportunity for our community to come together in gratitude.”
Fort William Henry will host a special presentation on November 11th, featuring guest speakers and a reverent 21-gun salute at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
