Dear Parents and Students:
This booklet is provided for
students and parents as a guide to educational planning.
It should be read carefully as the choices available each year are
considered. To make the most of the
many opportunities available at Lake George Jr.-Sr. High School, a student must
plan thoughtfully.
Our teachers, department heads,
and counselors are available to provide whatever assistance is needed as a
student and his/her parents choose courses and plan a program.
The most important
decision-maker in the process, however, is the student himself/herself.
The most important quality he/she brings to the task of making choices is
an honest self-appraisal.
We are here to explain as
clearly as we can what the requirements are for any course of action a student
decides to pursue. Recently, there
have been many changes in the requirements set by the State of New York.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
In addition, we are here to help
students evaluate their own interests and abilities as they plan for the present
and the future. The
ultimate responsibility for choice, however, rests with recommendation from
teacher, individual students and their parents.
All should seek as much information as they need while they are making
their plans. A counselor is
available to provide whatever assistance may be desired.
In addition to the courses which
are offered in the academic program, there are many opportunities for
participation in activities outside of the classroom. The process of self-realization may be achieved as readily
through membership in a club activity or interscholastic sport as it is in the
classroom. The discovery and
development of personal interests and the satisfaction of a wholesome social
experience are as much a part of a student's education as are the academic
requirements which must be met. An
individual should pursue activities which enable him/her to gain knowledge of
himself/herself and to contribute to the life of the entire school.
We hope that each person will
find in this booklet a guide to the experience which will make him/her someone
who knows how to achieve the satisfaction of a good life and who is willing to
accept the role of a citizen responsible for the creation of a society in which
he/she and all others may enjoy this good life.
Starting in grade 9, certain
courses are required each year. All
students in grades 9-12 are required to take six assignments each year, plus
physical education. Within each
department, listings are found of those courses, which are graduation
requirements or electives. Electives
should be carefully selected and included to enrich and extend the experiences
of the pupil. Please see the
section entitled “Requirements for Graduation” for specific details about
required courses and exams.
Each student must give very
careful consideration to the selection of courses for the coming school year.
This selection process involves the student, counselor, teacher and
parent early in the second semester of each year.
Once the selection process has been completed, changes in a student's
schedule will not be allowed except in very unusual circumstances.
Students are encouraged to take
a long-range view of their aims and objectives and to select courses that fit in
with their objectives, abilities, aptitudes and interests.
The counselors will give them help and advice in the final selection.
Please do not hesitate to let us know of your concerns or questions in
this planning process.
Sincerely,
STEPHEN PREUSS, High School Counselor
